5-Iodo-2-aminoindane (5-IAI) is a drug which acts as a serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine releasing agent. It was developed at Purdue University by a team led by David E. Nichols in the 1990s. 5-IAI completely replaces MDMA in rodents and is a human putative entactogen. 5-IAI induces some serotonergic neurotoxicity in rats, unlike related aminoindane derivatives such as MDAI and MMAI, but it is significantly less toxic than its corresponding pIA amphetamine homologue, with the observed harm barely reaching statistical significance.
